From a recent article about Kate Mulgrew. . .

"On top of that, she's been writing a book of poetry, which has been more difficult than she expected."

Hahaha!

She should have just asked Jewel.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that she wrote a lot of poetry in her teens (didn't we all), but the nuns tactfully told her she was better at performing than writing it. Just have to hope she's improved with time.

Indeed. I definitely wouldn't want anyone to read the dreck I wrote in my teens. But I like to think that I've gained more skill and experience over the years; perhaps she has, too.

Can I confess to having gotten Jewel's book out of the library when I was 12? *winces from the memory* Spirit was one of the first cds I ever owned, and consequently I looked up all things Jewel. (Still think it's a decent album.)

The book was crap, of course, but I didn't realize that, I was just taken with the whole idea of poetry. And looking back, there are a *few* poems in there that are decent. They deal with the pain of growing up, and are probably decent because she had experienced what she was writing about.

I don't think Mulgrew can do worse than Jewel, at least she realizes that poetry *is* hard. I don't think Jewel ever did.

The first album (vinyl then) I ever bought with my own money was the Beatles' White Album. Loved it; played it to death. If the Beatles had published poetry (beyond their lyrics), I would have read it for sure.

I shouldn't make fun of Mulgrew (or Jewel either, for that matter). I think it's very brave of anyone to write something, put their heart into it, and then put it out there for the merciless public to judge. And maybe KM will turn out to be good.

But in general, I tend to think that the only famous people who should publish poetry are the ones who got famous by writing poetry. (Same goes for children's books -- the number of celebs writing children's books is mind-boggling. Some aren't too bad, but others. . . I guess people must think that writing children's books is easier than writing adult novels. If they only knew how hard it is.)
