RTRs -- Retro Trek Reks
Aug. 2nd, 2005 12:44 pmAs the woman with fifteen children often said, I'm late again. But that's not going to stop me from giving my RTRs anyway.
As a Janeway-all-the-wayer, I have decided to force myself to choose just a single story in some of the main Janeway pairings. Although I quite like all of these stories, I'm not trying to name my number-one "favorite" in each category; that's just not possible. But all the stories are definitely worth remembering and reading:
Janeway/Paris: "Absumption" by the Emu--a superb answer to the question, "What if there had been survivors from 'Timeless'?" A combination angsty love story, well-told action saga, and thought-provoking moral exploration, this story is VOY fanfic at its best.
Janeway/Torres: "Emergent Properties" by Liz Griffin. I'm not sure this pairing can be called a "main" one, since J/T never really took off (for reasons I'll be happy to discuss with anyone interested). But it still produced some fun fic. I like this one especially, because it takes me back to the early days of Voyager (although I don't think the ending works). Liz's site is off-line now; I could find this story only at the Wayback Machine. A pity.
Janeway/Kashyk: So many of my favorite Janeway stories are in this pairing that I had a horrible time picking just one. But one of my all-time favorite J/Ka fics has always been "The Middle of the Night" by Boadicea. To me, it encapsulates all that is disturbing and fascinating and hot about the pairing.
Janeway/Chakotay: "A Fine Line" by Jen Ferris. A fun early J/C and a good action story to boot.
Janeway/Seven: Ah, how to choose? I'll go with Jane St. Clair's "A Kiss on the Body Electric." I like it for all sorts of reasons, not the least of which is that it neither apologizes for nor ignores Janeway's age.
Janeway/Tuvok: This isn't my favorite J/Tu, but it's a good one, and I've recced my actual favorites (from Rocky, Boadicea, etc) elsewhere. This story, by Kim Brotherton, is the first J/Tu I ever read: "Irreversible"
You'll see that I've had to leave out all sorts of my favorite authors: Seema, august, Rocky, monkee, AlexVoy, Abbey, Julie Russo, m. c. moose, jenn, and on and on. But this list should give you enough to be getting on with.
