Today is the 28th day in a row of temperatures above 85F/30C (sometimes quite a bit above). I am officially so over summer (especially since I have to head back home in two weeks. What happened to all that time I had -- you know, when I was going to write fanfic and do research and crank out that academic article? Oh, well. Except for the weird illness in June, it's been a wonderful two months even though I wrote less than a quarter of what I'd hoped to. And it's not over quite yet. And next year, there will be diacon_alley).

I love NY, and here's one of the many reasons why: Shop windows like the one I passed in Soho this morning, a sex-toy store with a lovely display of Victorian bondage gear, including purple bondage tape and a decorative flowered-china plate (the sort grandmas used to hang on the wall) with the word "Wanker" painted on it in Gothic script. I have just the place for it on my office wall. It would be perfectly appropriate; I'm the Victorianist, after all.

Speaking of the Victorians, I have just about decided to make the fearfully extravagant purchase of these shoes. But the blame for this financial recklessness is not mine; it belongs to therealsnape, who has encouraged me, and to woldy, who put these shoes into my head in the first place by posting this link. And the ones I'm considering are less than half the price of the ones Woldy showed us, so actually, I'm showing a lot of fiscal responsibility.

I know that many of you on my flist write excellent fic recs, so you should consider signing up to rec some stories on crack_broom. The mods made a post today about the dearth of reccers for certain pairings, including femmeslash. You can also sign up for various one-shot rare pairs, which is great fun. (I've done Minerva/open and Snape/open and Minerva/Severus, and I'm slated for Flitwick/open in the fall.) Also, if you look at the Big Queue, you'll see that there's not a single person signed up to rec old-lady or teacher-fic. So do give reccing a try.
