It's five o'clock in the morning in NYC -- I've been sitting here since 4:00 with insomnia -- not a problem I usually have, but nonetheless, I'm having it now.  Can't muster the energy to write anything serious, so here is a fun meme stolen from [livejournal.com profile] diana_hawthorne and [livejournal.com profile] minervas_eule.

1. What did you do in 2009 that you'd never done before?
Went to Paris

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
You know, I was just discussing this very topic with [livejournal.com profile] therealsnape  yesterday.   I'm sure I did have some, but I don't recall them specifically now.  They were probably the generic ones I  make every year:  procrastinate less.  Eat better (a challenge for a cheese-and-carb lover).  I'll probably make (and fail at) these same resolutions again.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
My cousin died of a heart attack at age 48.  Still can't quite believe it.

5. What countries did you visit?
France, England

6. What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?
More time not spent on things like assessment reports and committee meetings and faculty evaluation letters.  The older I get, the more I resent every hour wasted on tedious, meaningless bullshit that improves no one and nothing.  (Bitter?  Who's bitter?)

7. What date from 2009 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
no one day in particular

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Writing about 100,000 words of fanfic.  (Did I really?  My god.  And like the damn disclaimers say, I didn't make a penny.)

9. What was your biggest failure?
Not writing any profic or professional stuff.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Not this year, luckily.  But in 2008 I broke my foot, and I remain grateful for every day that I'm not on crutches.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Blue leather boots, Paris

[not sure why there are no Questions 12 and 13, but whatever]

14. Where did most of your money go?
Several plane tickets to NYC (with a little side trip to Europe)

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
HP fanfic (or is that too pathetic to admit?  Don't care; had too much fun with it)

16. What song will always remind you of 2009?
"Pinball Wizard" (I know, not exactly a cutting-edge new sound.  But the child got some sort of rock guitar thing for his Wii, and he played along to PBW over and over.  And over.)

18. Compared to this time last year, are you richer or poorer?
Richer, although I assure you that's a relative term.  But I am incredibly privileged compared to most of the world, and I try not to forget it, whinge though I may about all sorts of silly things.

19. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Writing of all kinds, even fanfic (despite the 100K)

20. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Academic program assessment

21. How will you be spending Christmas?
At my partner's parents' house in the country, eating and drinking and acquiring and just generally contributing to nothing on the planet but my own enjoyment

22. Did you fall in love in 2009?
Daily.  With the same woman I've loved since 1999.

24. What was your favourite TV program?
Actually, I don't have a TV.  I moved right after Star Trek: Voyager went off the air, and somehow I never got around to getting the cable hooked up in my new house (have I mentioned that I have a little problem with procrastination?), and what with reading and the internet, I just never missed it, and now I barely have any idea what programs are even on, although the child and my partner watch Mad Men and Lost and Hell's Kitchen and Damages.  I did watch Damages when I was with them, which was fun, but I never got around to seeing the last two episodes of the second season, so I never knew who the secret villain was, and now I've more or less forgotten the plot, so it doesn't matter anyway.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Hahaha!  Love this question.  No, the people I hate have been with me for some time now, which is good, I think.  Comfy.

26. What was the best book you read?
Too hard to say.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Just how many original recordings you can get on YouTube.  No need to buy anything.

28. What did you want and get?
a 99% stress-free summer

29. What did you want and not get?
a new car

30. What was your favourite film of this year?
Il y a longtemps que je t'aime with Kristin Scott Thomas.  It came out in 2008, but I didn't see it till later.  And HBP, just for the sheer fun of seeing HP on screen, although I much prefer the fandom version of the whole universe.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Being in more plays.  I'd been off-stage for a few years, but being in a show again last January reminded me just how much I adore performing.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2009?
It's all about the shoes.

34. What kept you sane?
LJ and my flist and my RL friends and the partner/child and my family (minus my sister, who keeps me insane).

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
My usual older-woman thing -- Kate Mulgrew, Harriet Walter, Maggie Smith, Barbara Stanwyck (yes, I know she's no longer with us, but through the miracle of modern digital technology, she'll never really die).

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

US health care

37. Who did you miss the most?
My mother

38. Who was the best new person you met?
any number of flisties

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2009:
Do the fun things now, not later, because you may have a heart attack and die before your time

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
"The last time I saw Paris, her heart was warm and gay"  -- And the first time I saw Paris, too.  It was the weather that was warm -- roasting hot, actually -- and I'm the one who's gay, but still.  You get the point.

Loved your answer to no. 6. So true. I often find myself thinking that meetings should be illegal. Particularly those scheduled for 9.00 on Monday mornings.

Re no. 11: Ooh! Got any picspam of the blue leather boots? (Yes, I'm a shoe-whore. But I can mostly feed my addiction by admiring other people's shoes. So there's that.)

Your answer to no. 22 made me smile so big. Love stories make me happy.

Re no. 39: A very important lesson indeed.

I do wish you less of the no 6!
And no 2: yes, that's what you intended.
19: so do we, but that 100K is seriously impressive.
33: seems like a perennial, just as no 6.
22: may that truly be a perennial, my dear!

Interesting how much of life seems to be the perennials -- doing the same (often wonderful, often not) things over again.

Now I am very embarressed - I did not realize that there are no No. 12 and 13 ...should this fact tell me something about my lacking professional attitude?? *oh dear*

I am so glad about your No 24!! At least you are able to understand how we survive without TV since our move in 2007!! Sometimes I start to think I might be crazy, but your answer has been very reassuring!

Ha! I don't think so -- or if it does, then it says something to me, too, since there are quite a few other numbers missing, too.

As for the TV, I truly don't even miss it.

Ah, 33 sounds so familiar! And hooray for 15 - it's so much to our benefit.

Though my favourite answer of those is 22. *sigh*

I found numbers 12 and 13!

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

#24 reminded me very strongly of my own attitudes toward TV... who really has time for it? Why bring yourself to care? XD

#22 made my face go all ♥__♥ Awww!

And hey, you could easily avoid all those meetings and boring administrative thingies by changing careers. I'm just saying. There's no meetings in retail.

God, yes! This is such an amazing film, and KST is such a fabulous actress -- I've fangirled her ever since The English Patient (one of my favourite sad!movies, btw).

Also, I love your answer to #25. *g* I think you're one of the funniest people I know.

I saw KST on stage in NY last year in The Sea Gull -- fabulous performance, as you might imagine.

I think you're one of the funniest people I know

Ha! That's lovely; thank you (even if it does suggest that you don't know too many funny people /g/).
