Really! At first I thought it might be Neville--his look is clearly changing as he gets older, so that by the time of the last film he'll be unrecognizable to those who only saw him early on. But it wasn't. Dudley. Hm. I wish he'd appear as he is in the final film, so that a bit of the fat-characters-are-hapless-or-evil message dies on the page. M.
Yes, even in JKR's simplistic moral Universe, this attitude toward weight has always stood out as particularly egregious. Evidently he'd going to be padded for the film, though.
And hooray for his career taking off! There's worse than getting to play Shaw's son twice. (Wait ... that means Fiona Shaw as Mother Courage? ... *googles* ... in a Deborah Warner production? ... THIS MONTH?).

I know...wouldn't this be something to see? Sometimes not living in the UK is such a handicap. . .
I "collect" performances; I'm trying to see as many wonderful British actresses (and American, too) on stage as I can. So far, I've got Helen Mirren, Joan Plowright, Janet McTeer, Harriet Walter, Kirsten Scott-Thomas, Eileen Atkins, Vanessa Redgrave. I would love to add Shaw to this list. I'm just so sorry I haven't seen Dame Maggie, especially now that she says she may be done with the stage.
What an impressive list. I'd be happy if I'd even seen one of them live.
Maggie Smith's retirement from the stage would be a real loss. I had hoped to catch a performance of hers, too, one day. But we don't know...perhaps things will look different for her in a few months. It's a bloody lottery, but it might hapen.
You totally have the victory on this one. Because I was all sure that of course I'd get it if I knew him, so he must simply just be one of the men celebrities of whom I've never heard. Wow.
Slightly depressing though - if he were to show up in the last movie, I wonder if Harry/Dudley would suddenly become a popular ship? Although, in fandom's (mild) defense, Rowling's own attitude to weight is, as you say, egregious. I remember noticing she makes fun of Crabbe and Goyle for being fat and gluttonous (connecting the two) not five pages after describing Ron and Harry stuffing themselves to the gills. But of course, it's not the same thing because two are already marked out for good and the other two for evil :p
I only found out about Mother Courage from missfoxie last night. Going to go see it, and will report back unless it turns out I can't manage anything more insightful than "Mmmmmm, Fiona Shaw."

This is really exciting! "Mmmmm, Fiona Shaw" is a sufficiently worthwhile comment, of course, but I'll really look forward to further details. And maybe it's not impossible that the show will come to NY.
Oh dear. Meant to type "one of the many celebrities". That was a bit Freudian.

On the one hand, I'd welcome that - I'm a Harry/Dudley shipper, have always been (and Dudley/Draco, but I will just get stoned if I say it aloud), and the ship could need a few more fans. On the other hand, it would just show society's stupid attitude towards weight, if shipping them now that he's grown thinner would suddenly become more popular.
I just recently came across that picture myself and the knowledge that he is PATRICK TROUGHTON'S grandson!
Okay, I 'splain. Patrick Troughton played Doctor Who in the late sixties. AND falls into that lovely category, Adorable Short Men with Dellightful Speaking Voices.
Oh wow, I'd never have guessed! Dudley is one of my favourites in HP, and I love this picture - I'll imagine him like that for my stories which are taking place after the war.
Me too. There are so many play I wish I could see over there, but I have no time and/or money to fly to England. (Not to mention being scared of flying ;)
