Fandom Musings and My New Fic

I've been distracting myself on this sad day with some fandom fun, so I thought I'd share a bit with you.
First off,
hp_goldenage is collecting prompts for its upcoming "Salt-and-Pepper" fest, and I have to say, it's been a long time since I was this excited by fest prompts. There are at least eight of them that I would love to write.
I've been having a bit of an HP-writing renaissance these days, and I think I'm going to have to sign up.
(Aside -- it's interesting, this renaissance. I think I've been feeling that HP fandom as I know it is sliding to its inevitable end: I see people disappearing to other fandoms and other platforms; I see long-time fests ending or getting much smaller; on those fests still going, I see fewer and fewer comments; the once-flourishing practice of recs is almost dead. I know it's part of a natural cycle of things, and I know I've lost a lot of momentum myself [after all, I've been at this now for seven years]). All good things must end. But still, I'm feeling nostalgic regret. I think my drive to sign up for a lot of fests [five this autumn alone -- almost like my early days!] is a sort of last hurrah, a spitting in the face of Death before he collects me.
But even if we all stop writing and drawing HP, I'm not going to give you up, all my dear friends! You're stuck with me until you hit that "unfriend" button.)
In other fest news, my entry for
hp_darkarts was posted today. (It's not an anonymous fest, so I'm not breaching protocol with my self-aggrandizement /g/.)
I've always had a soft spot for dark!fic (misery and terror in fiction are a lot easier to face than misery and terror in RL) and have written several in the past. This particular story is one I've long wanted to tell -- not this particular plot, necessarily (since I had no idea when I started writing just how the story would evolve), but this premise. What premise is that, you ask? Read and see!
Here's the link:
The Talisman (Lucius, Narcissa, Abraxas, Minerva; NC-17; dark themes)
And in extra-good fandom news, we still have
hoggywartyxmas to look forward to!
First off,

This will be a bit nostalgic...
Date: 2015-11-17 10:46 am (UTC)I know exactly what you mean. I remember when there were too many fests to even fathom, when everyone was commenting on multiple platforms at once and crossposting everywhere. I was here for some massive shipping wars, even though it was the tail end of them. It was difficult to keep up with one side of fandom, and it was back when there were so many factions and sides that it seemed the entire world was writing fic/meta/commenting and going to conventions.
Re: the sliding into an inevitable end—well, maybe. I've dabbled a bit in Les Mis fandom (on the literary side of things rather than the musical/film), which part of me thinks is completely ludicrous. It's a canon that is a century and a half old! How can there be this many people interested in it! And writing fic! And meta! What?! I guess, in my heart of hearts, I believe HP will go through a cycle where new blood will come in at some point and totally revitalise it. It might not be the same people, but, Hell, my beta is nineteen.
Plus, having more than one major fandom to focus on seems to be the norm these days. I never used to have the energy for more than one endeavour, but I can see it happening in myself and in others. So there's that.
Gulp. This was long. Also: Hi! I'm adding you here.

Date: 2015-11-23 12:01 am (UTC)Yeah, I should have said that the fandom as I know it is ending. I'm sure HP fandom in general will continue -- as you say, new people all the time, new blood, new media platforms and (maybe) new fests (though I think the form of fests is going to change -- has already changed). But I'm not sure how much of a part of the new HP world I'll be. . .I haven't moved to Tumblr and the other new fannish platforms (can't even remember half of them).
I'm usually a serial monogamist when it comes to fandoms. I'm an obsessive sort, so when I get sucked into something, it tends to consume me. I'd probably explode if I got too involved in more than one at a time!
Do you know Miss Morland in the Les Mis fandom?
