Even though I've been posting occasionally, I still feel as if I've been off the fandom/flist radar for a while. RL, you know. . .it gets -- not "bad," exactly, because externally, 2013 wasn't a terrible year for me at all. But internally, well. . .I've had better RL years, better fandom years.

So to get that fan and flist mojo going again, I thought I'd try this:

Here's the first challenge:

Day One -- In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

For this first challenge, I've chosen the theme of "firsts." Once I got started thinking of them, I came up with a lot of possible firsts: my first m/m slash fic, my first BDSM fic, my first threesome, my first entry as a [info]daily_deviant writer, my first fanfic ever, my first Minerva/Severus story, my first HP fanfic. . .

But the challenge said, "three," so three it is. Here you go.

My first-ever piece of femmeslash:

Equation
It's from the Star Trek: Voyager fandom, written in 1999, when I was obsessed with the character of Captain Kathryn Janeway. The first-person narrator and her friends are OCs; the VOY pairing is J/7 (Kathryn Janeway/Seven of Nine).

My first-ever piece of Jane Austen fanfic:

Solace and Solitude
Written in for the 2011 [info]femgenficathon, a fun (though now, sadly, apparently defunct) fest celebrating women of all fandoms. Characters: Lydia Bennet Wickham, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Anne de Bourgh

My first-ever (make that "only") piece of real-person fic:

Majesty
This story was also written for [info]femgenficathon, in 2009, which was fairly early in my HP days. For some reason, I found it very hard to write, but I was pleased with the results. Characters: Minerva McGonagall, Queen Elizabeth II, Kingsley Shacklebolt

I love these choices, because they're apparently nonobvious but these pieces are so representative of some of your most consistent thematic interests and your style (analysis from all angles of what power means to women; a gift for voice in dialogue; the balance of a kind of intense focus with a smooth narrative arc). And fun to revisit them... and now that I see you've put your VOY fic up on AO3, I might have to read all of it at last.

I'm sorry to hear that 2013 has been tough on you – cheering for you in the year to come.

Oooo....Janeway/Seven takes me WAY back to my Star Trek days! That's a nice way to celebrate fandom. Throwing that on my reading list right now.

All the best for your fannish and flist mojo, and your inner self! *hugs*
"Majesty" is still one of the stories that impressed me most at all time.
