. . .when it's not. Like this entire week.

Sit back whilst I, like the Ancient Mariner, grab your arm ("I fear thee, Ancient Mariner / I fear thy skinny hand") and detain you with my tale of woe.

Last week, my wireless connection at home began behaving strangely, refusing to let me log on, dropping the connection, and so on. I hoped it would get over itself, but it didn't, so finally, on Saturday, I began the laborious process of calling the internet company. Many minutes on hold later, I was promised that a new modem would be sent to be at once. (Well, actually by Wednesday; it couldn't be sooner, because of the US Labor Day holiday, yada yada).

Okay, fine. I was able to snatch occasional minutes of connection here and there for the next couple of days, but on Monday night, the modem gave up the ghost completely.

An annoyance, but not devastating, I mean, I always have my school internet, right?

Wrong.

Don't ask me for the tech specifics, but the school has recently expanded its bandwidth, and various server switcheroos have to occur, which are causing bottlenecks and. . .well, I don't really understand it, but the upshot is that the internet at school is so slow that it essentially is not working. Every time we click on a link, we wait and wait and wait, only to be told that "the page cannot be displayed."

So basically, I have been without internet since Monday night, and I don't mind telling you, I DON'T LIKE IT.

Now you might be saying, "if you have no internet, then how are you writing to us now? Hmmmmmmm? Answer me that."

Okay, I will: the modem arrived (on Thursday rather than on the promised Wednesday, but still, it arrived). And it actually worked when set up! (Well, okay, I did have to call tech support and wait on hold for about 12 minutes because my computer has no ethernet port and thus I needed further instructions, but still. . .

I'm connected. Yes, indeed, this Ancient Mariner's tale has a happy ending. Internet, internet everywhere, and not a dropped connection! (Yeah, so I changed the words a bit. Sue me.)

To everyone to whom I owe emails, beta readings, story readings, comments to your LJ entries -- I will be getting back to you as soon as school is over tomorrow (Friday). Thank you for your patience; sorry for the delays.
