I'm finally caught up with my reading at [info]hp_friendship, and what a winner of fest it has turned out to be. Just when I'd begun to get rather jaded about HP fandom, thinking there was nothing new left to be written, along comes a fest with an amazing number of clever and original stories featuring a huge range of characters and tones: everything from hilarious near-crack with Minerva and portraits!Albus and Severus to a well-written and harrowing story of Luna and Draco during the DH year. And then there's Argus Filch and Arabella Figg as London children evacuated to the country in 1939, Rita Skeeter and Gilderoy Lockhart as roomies, stories about Filch and his cat (a heartbreaking heart warmer, this one) and Aunt Marge and her dog, and so much more.

As usual, I had a hard time narrowing my list of recs, but here are some of my favorites so far:

Cocktail Time by Anonymous (Rita Skeeter, Gilderoy Lockhart; PG-13)
This story shades beautifully and plausibly from humorous to chilling, and you'll rarely hear a better Rita. Clever, bitchy, always with an eye to the main chance -- and yet likable. This fic is a triumph of voice.

The Road to Roundabout by Anonymous (Dudley Dursley, Harry Potter, cameos by many)
A beautifully-written extravaganza of historical detail, exquisite world-building, and expert characterization. This fic is one to be savored -- turn the phrases over on your tongue and listen to the pitch-perfect voices.

And It Could Be Me, And It Could Be Thee by Anonymous (Griselda Marchbanks, Augusta Longbottom, and a wizarding and Muggle cast of thousands)
Pretty clearly done by the same superb writer who authored the Dudley, Harry fic mentioned above. Mystery Author has again seamlessly blended the wizarding world with the Muggle in another dense, wonderfully-written story about several generations of powerful women.

Mad Dogs and Scotsmen by Anonymous (Alastor Moody, Emmeline Vance; PG-13)
After his ordeal in Barty Crouch's trunk, Moody needs some time to recuperate, and Auror colleague Vance volunteers to take him in. The resulting story combines snappy writing with believable characterization and moments that are both laugh-aloud and moving.

A Working Relationship by Anonymous (Minerva McGonagall, Severus Snape; G)
This fic has a premise unusual in fanon: Minerva doesn't like Severus and never has. Yet they have believable respect for each other. The characterizations are layered and plausible and feel completely real to me.

The Wages of Wagering by Anonymous (Minerva McGonagall, Portrait!Albus, Portrait!Severus, Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank; PG-13)
This fic verges on the cracky (normally not my favorite genre), but it's done so cleverly and with such insight and such fabulous lines that I was able to embrace my inner crack-head and enjoy it thoroughly.

On the principle that less is more, I'll stop here, but I could easily go on; this fest has almost an embarrassment of riches.
