Depressing news -- Sally Ride has died.
The first American woman in space (which didn't happen until 1983!) Even though I'm an idiot about science, I still saw her as a role model. I really admired her; so brilliant -- A Ph.D. in astrophysics from Stanford, wow.
There was something about her that made me think she might be a lesbian; I remember being surprised to read that she had a husband. But now I see in her obit that she divorced in 1987 and has had a female partner for 27 years (something that must have begun before the divorce occurred, given the dates). So yeah -- gaydar is for real! /g/
Anyway, I'm so sorry she's gone. She did so much for women in the sciences.
