Arcadia Redux
Jun. 2nd, 2011 02:27 pmI'm excited -- tonight I'm going to see the Broadway revival of my very favorite play, Tom Stoppard's Arcadia. I've seen it twice before (once in its Broadway premiere in 1995 and once at the Folger Theatre in 2009) and performed in it once (as Lady Croom). I teach it every year, and I love every witty, deep word.
In the 1995 production, Billy Crudup played Septimus, the rake/beau hero in the 1809 section of the story; this time, he plays Bernard Nightingale, the hilariously arrogant prick of an academic (from the modern-day part of the story). The New York Times reviewer calls it a "half-terrific revival of a terrific play." I'm looking forward to seeing if I agree (with the "half-terrific" part; I already adore the play itself).
