Back in the USNY

kelly_chamblissI'm safely back in NY. The trip was totally uneventful, for which I'm grateful. I'm also grateful that in the past month, I've driven my 12-year-old car a total of nearly 4,000 miles (about 6400 km), and it hasn't protested in the least. It's looking as if my $1400 repairs were a good investment.
Proof that the need to explain the world through similes is an inherent human impulse: When he was about three, my friend's brother used to say of the weather, "It's hot as a stit." None of his family knew what a "stit" was, but when they asked him, he'd stamp his foot and say irritably, "you know -- a stit." This phrase became part of the family's lexicon, and in time, it spread to family friends like me.
So now I extend it to my family of LJ friends and say, "It's hot as TWO stits in NY today."
We went out to brunch this morning, where I had, among other treats, pink grapefruit with black pepper and honey. It was quite refreshing.
Outlook for the near future: I have some school-related things to do in the next few days, but I hope to start some of my fest fics. My partner's birthday is next Saturday; she wants to have al fresco tea at her parents' house in the country. If you have any suggestions about tasty tea cakes or sandwiches, I'd love to hear them. (I'll be making traditional cucumber sandwiches and pineapple-ham-cream-cheese on raisin bread. And fresh strawberries.) What else should we have?

Date: 2010-06-06 11:51 pm (UTC)I like scones and clotted cream from time to time but that might be too heavy. I love fruit with my tea, especially berries besides strawberries. Raspberry sorbet sounds just about right what with the weather.
It's hot as a stit here too, which is absolutely awful. Hope it'll be a bit better in the next few days as I have to go places and would hate to suffer outside :(
