I'm Home and ANTS!!

kelly_chamblissI'm back home after visiting my family. The visit was lovely, and the drive back was uneventful. While I was gone, my landscaper friends (who come once a year to spruce up the place) did their magic, and my bushes/flowers look beautiful. Everything seemed jake. . .and then. . .
I unloaded the car, did a little unpacking, and went to the cupboard to get a can of soup for dinner. As I reached for the knob, I noticed about ten of those little sugar ants on the (white) cabinet door. With a paper towel I dispatched them, but as I did so, two or three more appeared. "I hope they aren't in the cupboard," I thought, and opened the door. OMG!!! It was like that 1950s movie -- IT'S THEM!!! And the more I looked, the more I saw: ants on the stove, on the wall behind the stove, down the side of the cabinet, in a long line along the baseboard to the french doors to the deck... Ugh and ugh.
I'm not squeamish about ants overall, but god, I don't want them in my cabinets! And they were. . .argh, you should have seen the boxes of cereal and crackers and sugar. (No, on second thought, better that you didn't see them.) After I open a box or bag of sugar, I pour it into an airtight container, but I had an unopened box of sugar cubes, and the ants had simply swarmed it. I've thrown out everything from the cabinet that wasn't in a sealed can or jar. Some of it was probably safe enough, but I'm taking no chances.
I'm not sure what I'll do about the damned things. Ant buttons don't work with sugar ants, and I don't want pesticides in my kitchen. They are all dead at present, but on Wednesday, I'm supposed to leave for ten weeks. The ants are going to take over the joint while I'm gone. I bet I'll have to call an exterminator. Jeez. I've lived in this house since 2002, and I've never had this problem before.
Well, I'll think about it tomorrow, at Tara. Meanwhile, I'll finish the unpacking and do some laundry. I'll postpone dinner; it doesn't seem quite so appealing as it did a while ago.
