Good, Clean Troth

Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank didn't care for Quidditch.

This fact always surprised those people who looked at her stocky shape and her short grey hair and her pipe and her arm muscles (proud of those, she was) and assumed that of course she must like all things dangerous and physical and "manly."

If they'd asked, Will would have said yes, she did admire manly things, though she preferred to think of them as "humanly." Things like integrity. Loyalty to those who deserved it. Consideration. Honour. Respect for beings weaker than oneself.

What the old knights used to call "troth."

Physical fitness--now that, Will could get behind. But cutthroat competition and bloodlust and taking unseemly pleasure in one's opponent's defeat. . .she had no time for such nonsense. Yet often, it seemed that the nonsense was all that Quidditch had become for some people.

So no, Will didn't much go for Quidditch.

What she did go for was the Quidditch instructor.

Few human things could set Will's heart a-pounding like the sight of Rolanda Hooch striding onto the Quidditch pitch, her boots outlining her tight calves, her yellow eyes as piercing as the whistle she blew to call the match to order.

"Captains, shake hands," she'd order, her toned arms akimbo, her voice brooking no dissent. "I want a good, clean game."

That was one of the things Will loved about Rolanda: her commitment to the good and the clean, whether the good, clean fun of mucking about in mud and fresh air with animals, or the cleanliness of honest good sportsmanship.

And there was another kind of cleanliness Will loved--the kind that came when she and Ro pledged their troth at night, their hard bodies now soft and entwined, the taste of Ro still sharp and salty-clean on Will's lips.
