Taking the Night Off

I have finished my entry for
minerva_fest. Finally.
And now I have a ton of things to do, but instead, I'm taking the night off and puttering around the web.
So I'm going to subject you to some random thoughts. You probably don't care about them, but I don't care if you don't care. What is the internet for, if not to allow us to present our most trivial thoughts to the waiting world?
The following are in no particular order; you will look in vain for transitions.
Because this is also the age of multi-tasking, I'm also noodling around trying to find some way to watch the Emmys even though I don't have a TV. There's a weird "Emmys Backstage" feed, which is better than nothing, but as I say...weird. Apparently there are far more people backstage than are actually watching from the front of the house. But the good news is that you can sort of hear what's happening on stage.
One of the drawbacks to not having a TV is that you don't know who anyone is any more -- which is something I don't usually mind, except when I spend some time (as one does) looking at pictures of the red-carpet arrivals and criticizing their clothes. It's not as satisfying to make fun of people you've never heard of as it is to ridicule those you see in your living room every week.
But I stuck it out with "Emmys Backstage," because I wanted to see how the Downton-ers fared. Here's a run-down:
• Oh, no! *sob* Carson lost! I so wanted Jim Carter to win as Carson the butler. And he was there, looking very Carson-like in his tux. (Brendan Coyle [Bates] was there, too, and lost as well.)
• Yay! Maggie Smith scored Emmy #2 as Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham. She wasn't there, of course, which I guess I understand (international travel probably isn't easy when you're 77), and she's famous for hating these sorts of events. But still. It would have been fun to see her.
• Lord Grantham lost as Best Actor in a Drama, as did the Main Mad Man, Jon Hamm. But at least Lucius Malfoy won. (Oh, no, wait, my bad. It's Helen McCrory's husband who won, but oddly, he doesn't appear to be Lucius.)
• And Michelle Dockery's loss as Best Actress concluded the near shut-out for Downton actors.
Why didn't the Downton actors fare better in the awards? Personally, I think it must be the plots. They need more drama -- a war or something. Or the rest of the actors need to petition to be given some of the Dowager's lines.
And Sarah Palin won! (Well, Julianne Moore playing Sarah Palin.) Let's hope this is the very last thing Sarah ever wins.
In Which Richard Burton, to No One's Surprise, Proves Himself to Be an Arse
According to Richard "Even My Diaries Are Stupid" Burton, Maggie Smith is "dull" and "plain" and put him off sex (which is something that didn't happen often enough, if you ask me.) He didn't think much of Vanessa Redgrave, Robert Redford, Robert Stephens, or Sean Connery, either. Read all about it here.
Here's Michelle Dockery arriving at the Emmys. She looks rather unhappy about the whole thing, doesn't she? That's probably because she's not wearing cool vintage clothes.
Here's Ellen Degeneres looking snappy in a tux
Look here! And here! Merpeople are real!
Well, I've trespassed on your patience long enough. Good night, dears!

Yes, she should have done that a lot more often.
