It's exactly what many of us have said all along: JKR on the mistake of Hermione/Ron. (Though why should Harry be Hermione's only alternative to Ron? Why did she have to pair off with either one of them?)

Another thing I want to know: why make this pronouncement now, JKR? The fan part of me is always eager to hear this sort of detail about a world I love. But the writer part of me says -- Stop it! The books are finished. If you have more to say about these characters and this universe, then write another book about them. Send Ron and Hermione to marriage counseling, if you want to. But don't try to rewrite the original books after the fact.

I wish Allan Sherman was still alive. He's the genius behind that classic parody, Camp Granada (aka "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah.") Another of his great song parodies made fun of a well-known 1960s talk show host, David Susskind. To the tune of an old gospel song called Little David, Play on Your Harp, Sherman sang, "Little David Susskind, Shut Up."

I want to rewrite that as "Little JK Rowling, Shut Up." You can totally sing it. It scans and everything.

Because listen, Jo, every time you say something like this -- "It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility" -- you completely undermine your own credibility as an artist. Serious writers don't make significant literary choices for "very personal reasons" unless those reasons are artistic.

So, okay, flist, let's sing along. All together now: "Little JK Rowling, shut up. . ."**

(**Exception -- If JKR wants to say, "I made a mistake in not being more direct about the fact that Minerva McGonagall was in a long-standing lesbian relationship with Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank" [or "carried on a long affair with Severus Snape" or "had once been in love with Alastor Moody" or "took Harry's Firebolt not for testing but for the chance to spend the evening with her lover Rolanda Hooch"], THEN I'll fight for her right to say whatever she damn well pleases.)
