Well, here I am on the eve of travel again. I had 11 days with my family, which I thought would be a lovely long time, and of course it's flown past.
It rained 9 out of the 11 days, but at least we had one lovely afternoon for a family picnic at the home of one of my cousins yesterday.
The cousin who is coming to NY with me (the one with lung cancer) says she feels well enough to leave tomorrow, so we'll hit the road about noon. So far, so good with the ancient car.
I've managed better than I expected without internet (although I have made myself rather a fixture here in the Starbucks). On Sunday, while I was finishing up a long-overdue writing assignment, I realized that my computer had not been charging (I'd been totally oblivious until the "your-battery-is-almost-dead" beeping started). I was terrified that the problem was with the computer rather than the battery pack, but a quick trip today to the BestBuy Geek Squad confirmed that the battery pack is dead, dead, dead. I was so relieved that the machine itself is okay that I didn't blink (too much) at the $65 cost of the new battery. (I won't feel the full effect of the pain until the bill comes in.)
Today I had lunch with my two BFFs from high school. The fourth member of our group of friends died in the September 11 attacks, so we lifted a glass to her memory. How could so much time have passed since we all sat around my mother's kitchen table moaning about having to write senior research projects (while we fortified ourselves with doughnuts)?
I owe replies and comments to many of you. I'm not sure when I'll be able to catch up, but I'll check in periodically in between visits to tourist attractions with my cousin. Perhaps I'll even post pics from the top of the Empire State Building.
