30 Days of HP Meme -- Day 10
Aug. 5th, 2010 08:47 pm( Ghost of Questions Past )
Day 10. Dead character you want to bring back most.
Severus Snape, definitely. I wasn't angry with JKR for killing him off -- she'd prepared us for it, the death makes narrative sense (in good and perhaps bad ways), the scene is movingly-written, and for all we know, Snape himself might have welcomed his end.
But.
I want my Snape back! And thanks to fanfic, I have him.
In fact, I've written and read so many "Snape lives" fics that he hardly seems dead to me at all. Somehow, the fanon versions of surviving!Snape have become more potent and real to me than the canon death.
Which leaves me in the odd position of not really missing the dead person I want to bring back most, because in the Dumbledorian sense of real*, he's still alive. So perhaps he isn't really my answer to this question.
The person who is still dead to me, and whose death hurts most, is Alastor Moody. Somehow he's harder for me to resurrect, fanonically-speaking, than Snape is. And because part of me sees him as a perfect het partner for Minerva, I feel her grief and loss, too. /g/
So yeah, I really want to bring Moody back from the dead.
(*"The Dumbledorian Sense of Real" = "Of course it is happening inside your head, Kelly, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?")
