I Don't Get It!
Apr. 20th, 2010 11:03 amHere's a good example of why I find multiple journals frustrating: I'm used to LJ, and at the other journals, things look very similar, so I'm tempted to assume that they work the same way. But evidently not. Therein lies the frustration:
Example: I've had a Dreamwidth account since last August, but I've never used it. Yet in the wake of the LJ script nefariousness, various flisties have been flitting over to DW, so I thought I'd investigate the possibilities of cross-posting and adding people to my DW list.
But.
Unlike LJ (which I find very user-intuitive; I'm usually easily able to figure things out here), I don't understand how DW works. Take friend-adding, for instance. It's not called that at DW, but the process of "adding to your circle" seems very similar to the LJ friending process -- you can click "add to your circle" at the same place that LJ invites you to "add a friend," for instance. So I assumed that by adding people to my circle, I'd be adding them to my DW flist.
Not so, apparently. Even though I have added three of you (Tetley, Alcina, Pale) to the circle -- and DW has told me that you are, in fact, successfully added -- this appears not to be the case. "The Circle" (whatever that actually is) seems to disappear. The term appears nowhere on my profile page. Instead, the profile page contains "mutual access" and "mutual subscriptions" lists. Are these the same as friends/circles?
If so, the people I've encircled (or whatever it's called) do not appear there, and when I go to, say, Tetley's page, I'm still told (up at the top, in the same place as the LJ friending location), that I can "add [her] to my circle." (Which, as you'll recall, I have already been told I've successfully done.) So do I need to log off and log on again before a "circle" appears? Do I need to wait for you all to approve me? Or is the Circle just a red herring, and it's "subscription" that I'm supposed to click if I want to add a friend?
And all this, mind you, before I even begin to investigate the intricacies of cross-posting.
