Young and Old People Recs, Day 4

hp_holidaygen, which has been posting (a little erratically, but posting all the same) for the past few weeks. Unusually, this year has not contained any stories with the older women characters, but there are plenty of gems worth reading, with interesting takes on characters that I'd not really thought much about before -- Barty Crouch, Jr, Antonin Dolohov, Andromeda Tonks, Aberforth Dumbledore, the Fat Friar. Here are a few of my favorites:
• Masquerade: The Last Yuletide of Regulus Black by Anonymous (Regulus Black, Narcissa Malfoy, Barty Crouch, Jr., other DEs)
A very believable look inside Regulus's mind as he begins to face the mistake he made in joining Voldemort. I like the way the author uses literal and metaphorical masks throughout. All the characters are perceptively drawn, especially Regulus himself.
• A Reason to Fight by Anonymous (Aberforth Dumbledore, Neville Longbottom)
Between this story and some good ones athoggywartyxmas, Aberforth Dumbledore is my new favorite male character. This story is a "canon missing scene" that gives us a wonderfully nuanced picture of Aberforth -- a man trying to convince himself that he doesn't care while he knows, deep down, that he does. It's a bleak, powerful, heartening fic that has really stayed with me.
• Doorways by Anonymous (Fat Friar, other House ghosts)
This short fic has two intriguing premises: the notion that for the twelve days of Christmas, the ghosts can eat and drink, and the idea that they can eventually move on from being ghosts. The pov character in this moving, bittersweet fic is the Fat Friar, who is given interesting depth here. An original and inventive story.
