Snowy and Snapey = Snowpy?
Jan. 23rd, 2016 05:50 pmYes, it's winter. Yes, I know it snows every winter. It's snowing right now, of course. Partner is looking at probably at least two feet of the stuff [60 cm] in NYC, with more to come; my elderly friend in DC says she thinks there's already over two feet on her deck.
But just because it happens every winter doesn't mean I have to like it!
Nor do I. In fact, I hate it. But it's here and it's drear and while I won't get used to it, I'll deal with it.
One way I've dealt with it is to sit slug-like on the couch all day and catch up with the Snape Fest over at
severus_snape.
It's a dandy little fest, with several excellent stories that reassure me that yes, there are still plenty of interesting things to say in HP fandom!
Here are some recs:
Dim Sympathies (Severus, Minerva, Albus, Harry, Sir Cadogan, Sir Cadogan's trusted steed; PG-13)
A fascinating and original story with a unique take on how magical portraits are created, one that also explores the ethical implications of the notion of keeping bits of a person's consciousness around for eternity. The whole thing is rendered in an effectively poetic, imagistic style, and the ending is perfect.
K155 Me (Severus/Harry, NC-17)
I love non-magical AUs that keep the characters' traits and personalities beautifully intact. Severus is a technophobe chemistry professor, and Harry is his neighbor in this well-written, clever tale.
Last Chance Saloon (Severus, Narcissa; PG-13)
Here's another genre I really enjoy when it's well done: Voldemort-wins dystopias. The premise here is an excellent one: a resistance group formed by disenchanted Death Eaters and headed by. . .guess who?
An Association (Severus/Narcissa; NC-17; infidelity)
A really intriguing character study of Narcissa -- she's believably pragmatic, self-interested, canny, insightful, and beautifully Slytherin to her core. The story is described more than narrated, but I think this approach works well for Narcissa's sense of clear-eyed, calculating distance. And Severus matches her. These are not "nice" people -- but they are compelling ones. If you like stories about power negotiations, you'll enjoy this.
Stay warm! Stay home! Get drunk! If you're in the US on the East Coast or the mid-Atlantic region or even parts of the South, you aren't going anywhere anyway. At least eat a lot of comfort food.
