Random Things
Nov. 22nd, 2014 11:01 pmI have been terrible about posting lately, so I thought I'd better remind you of my existence before you all start saying, "Kelly who?"
So, here goes -- some random things to entertain you and to keep my name forever in your minds and hearts.
Informational Thing: Maggie Smith is alive, well, and snarky.
A fun article, but. . .what, it's only "Americans" who have been crass enough to approach her in public? Really? You mean that not a single one of the (apparently) hordes of people who "besieged" her on the streets of Paris were, say, Brits? Or Europeans? If she ran away from them, how does she know they were all Americans?
(This is a pet peeve of mine. For the last couple of years, I've been reading The Guardian on line, and the "let's make fun of Americans" commentary is pretty constant. I mean, seriously -- if we all really were as ignorant, a-historical, naive, hyperactive, and credulous as many non-Americans seem to think we are, we'd barely be able to to dress ourselves, let alone manage a fairly successful nation.)
Horrifying Things (some of them): pictures of giant denizens of the animal and insect worlds. Note Aragog.
Fandom Thing:

I will soon post my story from this fest, along with some thoughts about how the whole "concrit" business went and the many useful things I learned.
Personal Things: It's a really busy time of the semester, so I've been swamped with work and meetings. I have over 80 students this term, all in writing-intensive courses -- you can just imagine how many fun papers I have to grade. I've done 19 out of my current batch of 30; I'll finish the rest off tomorrow, ideally while mainlining coffee in the local roastery.
This coming Thursday is the Thanksgiving holiday in the US. I'll be heading off to visit the Young Man at his College Town; Partner will take the train and join us.
