Not Impressed!

• Today I am going to buy a lot of cupcakes and eat as many as I want. I've been craving wild flavors and frostings, and I'm going to follow Oscar Wilde's advice for dealing with temptation: give in to it.

• But maybe you don't care about my cupcakes and are sick of hearing about my recent self-indulgences. Maybe, just maybe, you are not impressed.

Well, fear not! Here's just the meme for you!

Backstory: In case you haven't followed recent Olympic gymnastics, McKayla Maroney is a US gymnast whose specialty is vault and who was widely expected to win the gold in that event; in fact, her win was a close to a certainty as one can get in this sport -- except that she fell on her second vault. Result (as the media annoyingly keep saying), she "settled" for silver.

Maroney tried to be as gracious in defeat as a 17-year-old who has fallen on her butt in front of the world can be, but a photographer caught a snap of her on the medal stand with her lips twisted in disappointment.

Result: This hilarious tumblr meme, McKayla is Not Impressed, which consists of photoshopping the scowling McKayla into every major site and event in the world: the Sphinx? McKayla is not impressed. Great Wall of China? Ditto. Being held in King Kong's fist? b-o-r-ing! The Beatles crossing Abbey Road? Kitty Hawk airplane flight? Mars Rover landing? Yawn. Seeing Jesus rise from the dead? Not Impressed!!! Mitt Romney? SO not impressed.

Part of me feels bad that she's being made fun of. Part of me loves it. And if you think about it, it's sort of a tribute to her, really. If she can laugh it off and be plucky about it, she'll be remembered much more fondly for this than if she'd simply won her gold medal, because let's face it, most Olympic medalists are forgotten about very quickly.

So, I'm impressed by McKayla not being impressed!
