I'm here in the Land the Time Forgot (my brother's internet-free house) visiting Teh Family. At this very moment, I'm sitting in Panera (a bakery/coffee/sandwich chain that offers free wireless) so that I can spend some quality time with my laptop. (Occasionally at my brother's, I'm able to log on to a neighbor's system, but the signal is so weak that I can rarely send anything or stay connected for long).
But other than the forced withdrawal from my addiction, I've been having a good time. Yesterday, my brother (who, sadly, has been temporarily [he hopes] laid off) and sister (whose day off it was) and I left home at 6:30 am to drive to used bookstores and antique malls. We didn't get back until 10:30 pm, and we had a grand day. I didn't find any books I needed, but we enjoyed looking at everything. It's like going to a museum where, if you fall in love with the exhibits, you can buy them. My sister is obsessed with 1960s retro kitchen gadgets, and there were plenty to be seen; she bought a polka-dotted juice carafe and glasses.
This afternoon, my brother and my BFF from high school and I are going to my favorite used bookstore, which specializes in all of my collecting areas: children's books, women's literature, lgbtq titles, theatre and film history. Then this evening, I'm having a birthday dinner/lesbian reunion with several friends from the "old days" of my youth. (I've bought a nice bottle of wine as a present for the birthday girl; wine aficianadas are easy to shop for. I always attach a silly label with a description: "overtones of Limburger cheese and A1 steak sauce, with a light salmony finish.")
I've been able only to skim my fandom links. I see that
springtime_gen has finished posting; I'll look forward to the reveals. (You'll never guess mine this time,
miss_morland! /g/)
Unfortunately, commenting has fallen off at
hp_beholder, which is a shame; fun pairings are still being posted. (Go over there,
vaysh11 and
melusinahp -- there's an H/D: Ode to Broken Things. I haven't had a chance to read the whole thing yet, but the first bits are excellent. And there's a Draco/Arthur Weasley [!], too.)
I hate to see fine stories get so few comments. I do understand that RL gets busy, and we can't read everything (look at me; I haven't been reading since Tuesday), but there are many people participating in HP Beholder, for instance, who have commented on nothing except their one gift. Now you know that they're probably checking the comment totals on their own stories and being pleased when new ones appear. Why wouldn't they want to spread that pleasure a bit?
I think participants in a fest ought to take a Pledge: "I solemnly swear that I will leave at least as many comments as I receive." Personally, I tend to post huge, flailing comments about the works I love, and these can take time to write, but commenting doesn't have to take long. A couple of lines, a couple of minutes.
By my calculations, there are only one or two further days of Beholder posting to come. I'm looking forward to those reveals, too, since I am so bad at guessing who wrote what. (You'll never guess mine this time,
miss_morland! /g/)
I'll be heading home on Sunday. I'm having various home repairs done during the first part of next week (unless they are urgent, I always save them up for when school is over, and then I can have them all done at once), and then I'll be off to New York on Wednesday or Thursday. THEN I'm going to kick back and start on a) my fanfic "To Read" list and b) my fanfic "To Write" list. I've signed up for Minerva Fest, Femgenficathon, that bdsm fest (hp_scc, I think it's called), and as soon as I post this, I'm going to go choose my prompt for the HP Femsmut "International Day of Femslash" challenge.
I look forward to catching up with you lot in a few days!
ETA: Weird Thing -- I used the Dreamwidth html code to put in the comm names for Springtime Gen and HP Beholder, and for some bizarre reason, the links lead to random things instead of the comms. I've checked the code, and it seems correct for the comms, so I have no idea what the problem is.
