What's Up

What's Up with the US:

I quote the political historian Heather Cox Richardson, whose pithy, concise, accurate summaries of each day's political horrors are often the only piece of news I can stand to read per day:

"Throughout now-president Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign, it was clear that his support was coming from three very different factions whose only shared ideology was a determination to destroy the federal government. Now we are watching them do it."

And they're trying to erase the very existence of trans and queer people while they're at it.

I trust I don't have to say anything further. You get the picture, I'm sure, and it's an evil and grim one.

What's Up with Me

Unlike the nation, I am not (yet) destroyed. In fact, I'm happy to report that -- ten weeks to the day since I broke my foot -- I am walking on my own again. The crutches have been put away in the closet; the air cast boot ditto (though I'm never going to get rid of it. If I dispose of it, I'd be pretty much asking for another break. But if I keep it, I might be safe. It's like rain -- if you take your umbrella with you, it won't rain. But if you don't. . .)

I'm walking very slowly and stiffly, to be sure, but I know I'll improve in time. Even though I sometimes feel an ache at the place where the actual break occurred, my main difficulty at the moment is with my knee. I think I strained it somehow when walking stiff-legged in the boot. But as I say, I'm sure these problems will be temporary and that I'll be able to move without limping soon.

Partner and I went to IKEA last week, and I can tell you, I have never been so happy just to walk around and look at housewares. (And eat meatballs, of course.) Today I took myself to the supermarket.

So my personal situation is much improved. I just wish the same could be said for American and global democracy!

Love you all! Stay "woke."

Yep, I lived in the U.S. through 3.5 years of the last Trump fiasco; my friends and family are discovering that I wasn’t bullshitting and y’know what? I miss the days when I could watch Canadian news and wonder if maybe I was going crazy — our news media sane-washed the hell out of him last time, and the view from this side of the border was very different than living in it.

I’m glad to hear that your foot is on the mend! I hope the knee and stiffness resolve themselves without any more fuss. It’s truly so nice after an injury to start to feel yourself again and enjoy doing things that the injury made challenging—I believe you about IKEA!

I'm very glad to hear about your foot! (And keeping the boot & crutches - I think you're absolutely right about Sod's Law on that front!) And yeah I'm sure things will keep improving.

Sending much love and solidarity from the UK. <3 I'm so sorry.

I'm glad your foot is doing better, and may the air cast boot serve as a talisman against future need. Hell, may the air cast boot improbably serve as a talisman for the restoration/securing of global democracy.

Thanks for mentioning Heather Cox Richardson's podcast. I hadn't heard of it before, and it is indeed a life-saver in these times. I hope you are doing well. ♥
