Drabble: "Night and Day" (Minerva/Severus)

I made it to the third round (eight participants left) of [livejournal.com profile] hp_humpdrabbles! I thank everyone kind enough to vote for my drabble. I'm quite surprised that a Minerva/Severus pairing won (and Severus/Lucius bondage the week before), since the name of the game in this fest seems to be (mostly) kink-free Trio-Era het. (Also, as I read my drabble again, at the distance of about a week since I composed it, I think it's a bit too choppy/disconnected. Still, I had fun with it; MMSS is always a pleasure.)

The competition is getting even more fierce -- my opponent next week is the always-excellent [livejournal.com profile] luvscharlie -- so my chances of reaching the Final Four may be a little better than a snowball's chance in you-know-where, but not much!

Anyway, here's the drabble:

Sometimes, without warning, his mind will relive that day, now five years past…

Hogwarts infirmary. A voice roused him--Minerva, speaking briskly as usual.

"Nothing further can be done?"

She'd wanted the truth, of course, plain and unvarnished; such was her way.

And it had become his. Severus had had enough of indirection and deceit. The war was over; he'd survived, and he was damned if he'd tolerate any more lies or half-truths. He wanted everything brought into the full light of day for all to see.

"No." That was Madam Pomfrey. "His blindness is total. And permanent."

Behind his bandages, Severus closed his eyes, for all the difference it didn't make.

Blind.

He was blind.

Permanently.

"I'm sorry," Poppy said.

"Are you?" asked Minerva. "A man who gave himself to the forces of Darkness, condemned to live without light. Some might call it cosmic justice."

"I don’t," Poppy replied. "I call it cosmic cruelty. What do you call it?"

"Deliverance," said Minerva. "He's alive. Free."

A rustle; Poppy must have shaken her head. "Severus might view it differently."

Another rustle as Minerva took his hand. "I'll help him see the light," she said, and Severus could hear her wry smile.

Poppy half-laughed. "You probably will, at that. You're a strange couple, you two. You'll tell him when he wakes?"

"I'll tell him." Minerva's touch was light against his cheek.

Then she was gone, leaving Severus to lie, motionless and numb, until finally the darkness of sleep had swallowed him.

Mostly, Severus tries to live in the present. It's better.

In the present, it is Minerva who swallows him, taking his cock into her mouth, smiling around him as he groans. She likes to keep him off-balance, stopping, starting, stopping again, surprising him with a light graze of teeth.

Severus pays her back. "I think for once your Gryffindors and I might find common ground," he observes, and the vibration of her questioning "hmmmm?" sets his cock jerking.

"Yes," he manages to say. "We'd all agree this is a better use for your mouth than explaining how to turn matchsticks into needles."

She sits up, but before he can miss her, she is beside him, drawing him to her, her breasts warm against his chest.

"Well, if it's to be one or the other," she says, "I'll save my strength for class. Your turn, Mr Snape."

He spreads her beneath him, taking his time, tracing every curve and hollow with slow fingers until she is writhing. He runs his hands through her hair, feeling its blackness; then he enters her, embracing her as the night enfolds them both.

It is dark--for him, of course, but for her as well. They never make love in daylight. Severus knows that she douses every candle, closes every curtain, before joining him naked in their bed.

Then they both can see only with their hands and ears and tongues, and for these brief moments, Severus's life of darkness is as bright as noon.
