Fanfic Article in "Harper's"

Hi, dears! It's been ages since I made a post of any kind, and as much as I'm sure you're dying to hear of my RL adventures of the last few months (I was almost killed! Partner and I are getting married!), and as much as I'm sure you want to hear me rant about the murderous Donald Fucking Trump and his (quite literal) Death Eater minions, I'm afraid you will still have to wait awhile for those treats.

Today, I've stopped in to alert you an article on HP fanfiction (and how it's being turned into pro-fic) in the mainstream magazine Harper's Bazaar. It's called The Irresistible Urge to Fall for Dramione Fanfiction.

While I personally feel no urge at all to read Dramione fanfiction, I am no ship-basher. Love what you love. There are wonderfully-written, complex stories about just about any pairing you can name, and gen, too. So maybe I'll even dip my toe into what is apparently a super-viral Dramione fic that I never heard of until I read this article: something called "Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love" (or DMATMOOBIL to the initiated). The author's notes are already fun.

The Harper's article is fun, too, if a bit basic, and offers some interesting thoughts. Enjoy!

You almost getting killed sounds like a not-fun update. I'm glad you survived it.

We are! The legal ceremony will be in NYC on July 25; then we'll have a party in Rural Hamlet later in the summer.

Sadly, we don't believe that same-sex marriage in the US will survive the Trump regime, so we figure we'd better do it while we can!

Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal etc. is great, I read it a few years ago and loved it and went down a Dramione rabbit hole afterwards.

I have been vaguely watching the progression of “Alchemised” (originally “Manacled” on AO3) for years, from when it was merely a massively-popular fic being plagiarized and sold on etsy/Amazon to its removal from AO3 and progression towards pro publication. I don’t think I’ll read it, it’s quite long, but I’m interested to see when someone inevitably breaks down the changes made for the pro version. I’m always curious about the ways that a story adapts to being “original” work!

I'm fascinated by this fanfic-to-profic pipeline. I hadn't heard of any of these Dramione fics before, but I find myself very curious about what it is in particular fics that make them seem suited to the move.
