A03 Meme

OCD person that I am, I adore making lists and keeping records. Frankly, a better procrastination tool was never invented.

That's why this current A03 meme is just the ticket for me (stolen from several fun people). Here's the deal: "Of your stories posted on A03, list the top ten in terms of hits and offer speculations."

I didn't do this meme last year, so I can't compare numbers there. But I will offer a few comparisons to FFN.

So far, I've posted 42 HP stories to A03. These 42 don't represent my entire HP output; I think I've got about 60 stories total. I haven't posted them all because a) I'm lazy, and b) it used to be very easy to import the files to A03 from FFN. For what seem to be FFN technical reasons, it's no longer possible to do that, and I haven't yet figured out how to import from elsewhere. (Not that I've tried very hard; I did try with TPP, but it didn't work. I could always just upload everything anew, but -- story of my life -- I haven't gotten around to it yet.)

As a rule, my A03 stories get very few hits and virtually no comments. Of the 42 stories posted there, one has received more than 200 but fewer than 300 hits, and twelve have more than 100 but fewer than 200 hits. Here are the ten most popular:

10. Laughing Last (Minerva, Severus Friendship) -- 114 hits since 24 July 2010
9. Tea for Two (Ginny/Luna) -- 116 hits since 8 December 2009
8. (tie) Watchers of the Sky (Narcissa/Lily) -- 124 hits since 8 December 2009
7. (tie) My Journal About My Life and Stephen and Miranda (Minerva/Severus) -- 124 hits since 24 July 2010
6. Truth Beyond (Minerva/Rita) -- 127 hits since 31 January 2010
5. Storytelling (Minerva, Hermione crush/friendship) -- 144 hits since 24 July 2010
4. M F McG (Minerva/Wilhelmina) -- 150 hits since 8 December 2009
3. Majesty (Minerva, QEII) -- 153 hits since 8 December 2009
2. The Lesson (Severus/Minerva, non-con) -- 176 hits since 24 July 2010

1. And the #1 story is. . .Five Creatures that Luna Believes In That Hermione Doesn't -- (Luna and Vince Crabbe/Millicent Bulstrode, Harry/Hermione, Ginny/Neville, Minerva/Septima Vector) -- 247 hits since 24 January 2010.

Some facts:
• Five of the ten stories are femmeslash (if you count the Minerva, Hermione, where the main pairing remains one of friendship, but there's a significant secondary f/f pair).
• Two of the ten are gen
• One technically has a pairing, but since it's non-con, it doesn't really count as pairing fic
• One is het
• One is mixed -- three het pairings, one f/f
• Seven of the ten feature Minerva as a main character
• Three feature Severus as a main character
• Four focus primarily on younger characters (counting "Storytelling")
• Only two are NC-17
• The #1 story is one of my least favorites, personally speaking.

So what does it all mean? Considering what a statistically significant sample this is, we can draw the following hard-and-fast conclusions:

• With one exception ("M F McG"), my older-woman femmeslash is not as popular as other stories -- most of my OLSB fics have 60 or fewer hits.
• Although no story posted after July of 2010 has more than 100 hits, it's not true that the earlier a story was posted, the more hits it has. My story with fewest hits -- "Liminality" -- was one of the earliest I put up. The ten most popular stories are fairly well spread out in terms of posting dates.
• Minerva/Severus does fairly well as a pairing.
• The Internet is full of PERVERTS! Overall, the stories with the larger number of hits tend to be non-con or bdsm.
• Question -- if a story has more than one chapter, does each chapter constitute a separate "hit"? If so, then number of hits alone doesn't really tell us the most popular.
• Those of my stories that got the most hits/attention when posted in fests ("Majesty," "My Journal. . .") tend to be the more popular here.
• A long story doesn't necessarily deter readers: My longest, "Storytelling," is in the top ten.

Comparisons with FFN --

• On FFN, "Liminality" is one of my more popular one-shots, always in the top five of hits each month. At A03, it's my lowest-rated story by far -- only 20 hits in over two years.
• On FFN, my consistently most popular story each month is "A Whiter Shade of Pale" (Minerva, Harry, Voldemort, non-con again -- what's wrong with me?). At A03, it's one of my lowest-rated stories, with only 78 hits in over three years. Why aren't people reading this non-con? Aren't there enough PERVERTS on the internet?
• My least popular story on FFN is Unbound (Minerva/Wilhelmina). It's also one of the least popular on A03 -- only 55 hits in two years.

That is a crying shame. But it makes me think this meme could be just as interesting if it asked for the bottom ten hits, or where your person favourites would rank. Looking at my full list of 300 or so, I notice that while I have a few outliers at either end, the stories I like best (and would myself read if I hadn't written them) are nearly all between the 100 and 200 mark.
