There have been similar weird stories in HP and Star Trek, too (and probably in other fandoms; I just don't know of them) -- where people claim to have terminal illnesses or sick children, etc. Sometimes they are trying to get money, but oftentimes, it seems as if it's just the attention and sympathy they crave. People's minds are weird places.
