Here's my entry for this year's [profile] wand_in_a_knot fest. The premise is really fun: each participant gets "tagged" by a previous participant and given a prompt. We then have 24 hours to create a story or art with an R or NC-17 rating. Any characters, any kink. So basically insta-porn. It's a really enjoyable challenge.

My prompt came from [personal profile] mywitch:

You're the picture of the devil's daughter,
I'm a pitcher of holy water.

I flung angels and devils and holy water up into the air, and they fell down as this story.

This bit of comic porn was my entry for this year's Kinky Kristmas fest at [community profile] daily_deviant. The prompter was the kind-and-wildly-talented [personal profile] mywitch, who asked for "Snape, by himself (thinking about: Surprise Me!)," with the kinks/themes of "wanking, getting caught" and a mood of "humorous and dirty." Her prompt was "candy cane."

I immediately had this vision of Snape sprawled on his sofa, cane (and other things) in hand, and this fic is the result. No redeeming social value whatsover. Just a whole lotta wankin' goin' on.

I recently took part in a fun fest called [info]wand_in_a_knot. The premise is that a participant gets tagged and given a short prompt; you then have 24 hours to create and post a piece of porn featuring any characters you like.

I received my tag at about 10:30 on the morning of Sunday, May 15; by about 10:40 on Monday the 16, my porny threesome was posted and frolicking.

Is the fic any good? Well, about as good as you would expect for something written between 5:00 p.m. and 3:20 a.m! /g/

I confess that I've done a little tinkering since the initial post, but not much. What you see is what I wrote in ten hours or so. So yeah, it's a little OOC and a little rushed and a little. . .um, shall we say, implausible, but it was a blast to write. Hope you enjoy!

Reveals have occurred at [info]daily_deviant's Banging Birthday fest, and I can lay claim to my story, written to an excellent prompt from [livejournal.com profile] songquake. When I saw "sapiosexuality" (being sexually aroused by intelligence) as a requested kink and "Minerva/Hermione" as a pairing option, I knew I'd found the prompt I wanted.

Now tbh, I don't think Minerva and Hermione would ever have a sexual relationship. But I always enjoy stories that make me say, "no, this would never happen. But if it DID happen, it would happen just like this." So that's the effect I tried to achieve here. I'm rather pleased with how the fic turned out; I hope you will be, too.

(Oh, and it turns out that my lovely Minerva/Severus gift, Adversaries and Anniversaries, was written by the always-excellent [livejournal.com profile] purplefluffycat. Thank you, my dear!)

Reveals are up at [info]severus_snape, and here's my fic. I contributed to the "mini fest" portion of the fest, for stories of under 500 words. For my entry, I indulged my love of the drabble form for a (for me) fairly traditional take on the Severus/Minerva relationship -- it's old-school MMSS (to the extent that there is an "old school"), and I found it fun and comforting to write.

Reveals are up at [info]mini_fest, and my contribution was a short Minerva/Severus Christmas story.

[info]mini_fest was one of the very first holiday fests I participated in, back in 2009, and I thought I'd like to be part of it again this year. My 2009 fic, Not a Present featured Severus, Minerva friendship (of sorts), so it seemed fitting to return to them.

This holiday season, [info]daily_deviant held a "Kinky Kristmas" comment fest, where members got to post wishes, and any reader or artist could choose to fill them.

I was lucky enough to receive a wonderful Minerva/Rolanda story from a writer I really admire, [livejournal.com profile] tjswhatnot.

I wanted to fulfill wishes, too, and give Kinky Kristmas fun to some of the many DD members whose work I love. My grand plans included writing for TJ, who left an intriguing Minerva/Poppy prompt, and a couple of others.

Well, December being the madhouse that it always is, and me being the procrastinator that I always am, these grand plans did not come to fruition. But late on New Year's Eve (the official deadline for wish-filling), I managed to finish and post the following ficlet for another of my much-admired writers, [livejournal.com profile] mindabbles. So that you will not expect too much, I'll sound the usual caveats: I wrote it quickly! It's unbeta'd! I'd had a glass (well, okay, three) of champagne!

TJ, I still have plans to fill your Minerva/Poppy wish (not to mention plans to finish [livejournal.com profile] therealsnape's much-belated birthday fic), so stay tuned.

A couple of months ago, [info]hp_darkarts ran a nifty little dark fest -- only 13 entries. Unfortunately, the works didn't generate many comments (I still have several to give myself), but it was a fun fest, and I enjoyed writing for it. Here's my fic.

Long-timers here know that every December, in those end-of-year fic summaries that ask for your plans for the new year, I always say that I want to write an evil!Minerva story. And I never do.

Until now.

Here she is, folks -- my Evil!Min. I tried to build her evil out of canon aspects of her character, just pushed to gradual, self-justified extremes. That's how genuine evil works, imo: very few ranting Voldy maniacs, but plenty of people who just take one rationalized step at a time, until they gradually become moral monsters, even as they tell themselves that what they are doing is necessary or right or logical or the only possible response or something their pride is owed or just what "anyone" would do . . . Even Donald Trump and Hitler apparently convinced themselves that they were in the right.

This story is pretty over-the-top, as evil!fic tends to be. It didn't make too much of a splash at the fest, but then, I don't think any fans of these characters will be happy with how they are presented here!

Here's the story I wrote for this year's [info]minerva_fest. Though it was a coincidence, the title turned out to be rather fitting: the last story posted in the last running of the fest. I'll seriously miss [info]minerva_fest; it's been a staple of my life for five year and has yielded many, many wonderful stories and artworks. But it's time to move on (for now, anyway).

Reveals have gone up at Remix Redux 2015 and Remix Madness 2015, and now I can lay claim to the following fics:

1. My official "Remix Redux" was a Star Trek: Voyager story for Miri Cleo, a writer new to me whose fic list offered a wonderful cornucopia of stories featuring Captain Janeway. I debated between remixing her fine, angsty Janeway/Crusher story, To Uncreate a Memory, but finally I couldn't resist lure of returning to one of my favorite VOY pairings, Janeway/Seven. Cleo's story is from Janeway's pov; my remix offers Seven's view. The result:

Penchant (The "Poetry" Remix) (Janeway/Seven; PG; ~1500 words). (With many thanks to my fine beta-reader and VOY friend of old, [livejournal.com profile] aabbey)

Here's Cleo's original: Poetry (Janeway/Seven; PG; ~600 words)

2. For Remix Madness, I did a very short remix of an atmospheric little piece by [livejournal.com profile] astrogirl2. Her's is from SS's pov; mine is from MM's.

The Taking of a Toast and Tea (the "Rest for the Weary" Remix) (Minerva/Severus; G; 318 words)

I think of it as taking place in the "Adela" universe (stories here and here), but you don't need to have read either of those stories to enjoy the remix.

Here is AstroGirl's original: Rest for the Weary (Minerva/Severus; G; 330 words).

I was lucky enough to receive two excellent Remix gifts; I can now reveal their authors:

Older and Wiser (Wilhelmina/Irma) was written by Epikoinos.

Like Nobody's Watching (Janeway/Paris) was written by Syrena of the Lake.

Both of these writers are new to me. I'm off now to read everything they have written!

If you get a chance, check out all the HP remixes at Redux and Madness -- fun reads all.

Back in the fall, I took part in a fascinating fest, [info]hp_concrit_fest, in which participants were required both to leave and accept detailed concrit. It was an exciting experiment, and I learned a great deal from people's thorough, kind, and helpful responses to my entry.

In particular, I realized that I have become a bit lazy in my characterizations. Since I normally write for people who already like and are very familiar with my favorite characters and pairings, I think I've begun to take a few shortcuts in providing sufficient explanation and background for relationships. Many of the [info]hp_concrit_fest participants wrote primarily H/D or Severus slash; most of them had little experience outside canon with older women characters and/or with Minerva/Severus. Thus they needed much more justification and development of a Minerva/Severus relationship than I am accustomed to providing for fellow Snagonagall fen.

Of course, maybe it's not "laziness" as such; maybe it's just the nature of writing fanfic in a particular subset of a canon universe. In a long-established fandom like HP, we have many well-developed "sub-canons," if you will, that have branched off from the original canon. Thus even if you know the original canon well, coming fresh into a sub-canon can be difficult, like entering an already-established society for which you have to learn the rules. I found myself in a similar situation when reading H/D fics for the fest: since I've read very little H/D, and since I don't have a pre-existing belief in the pairing, I need more preparation (than H/D fans would) before I can enter into the spirit of it.

Anyway, what I'd like to do here is to post my story mostly as originally written. Then, at the end, I'll ask you some questions based on the concrit I received. I'd love to hear your thoughts about possible revisions.

[info]femslash_remix has finished posting (though there's an amnesty period to come). I love remixing in general and femslash in general, and I particularly love it when all the stories in a femslash remix fest feature Minerva!

It was a small but dandy little fest (three stories). (A couple of them received very little response, which is a shame. They're excellent. You should go read them). I've already recced my remixed gift here, from [livejournal.com profile] _hannelore. The third fest entry is by [livejournal.com profile] woldy, who remixed a fun story by [livejournal.com profile] cranky__crocus.

And finally, here's my fic. The story I remixed, by [livejournal.com profile] magnetic_pole, appeared in the first run of [info]hoggywartyxmas and was one of my favorites of that year. When I saw that Maggie had offered her femslash stories for remixing this year, I jumped at the chance to revisit "Inheritance."

As some of you already know, I tend to hang around on the OCD spectrum, for better (often) and worse (sometimes). I spend a lot of time putting things in order and making lists and plans and FINISHING ALL THE THINGS, because I HAVE TO FINISH ALL THE THINGS, DAMMIT! I'm a completist, what can I say?

One of the things I felt compelled to finish this year was [community profile] trope_bingo, Round 3.

The premise of [community profile] trope_bingo is that you receive a bingo card listing a random assortment of common fanfic tropes. Your goal is to make a bingo by writing fics (or doing art, vids, fanmixes, etc.) featuring the tropes in a given line. Any fandom is fine. While creating one or several bingos is the ideal, you can qualify for each annual round just by filling one single square on the card during the calendar year of the fest.

I signed up for a 2014 card last January because it sounded like fun. But between RL and fandom commitments and my general laziness and procrastination, I didn't manage anything close to a bingo. In fact, I didn't manage to write a single [community profile] trope_bingo fic.

But as I say, I'm a completist, and my failure weighed on me. I kept intending to dash off at least one fic before the year ended, but being the procrastinator that I am (it's a veritable art form with me), I put it off and didn't manage to start writing until 6:00 p.m. on New Year's Eve. Still, I thought, six hours should be plenty of time.

Except that I didn't really have six hours, what with Uncle coming for tea and then our NYE plans for Peking Duck.

Thus I actually had about two and a half hours to write. Okay, maybe just two, if you subtract time spent sipping a little restorative. But I pulled something together nonetheless, using the tropes of "bets/wagers" and "kidfic." To me, these options immediately said "Snape and McGonagall." I managed to post the thing with ten minutes to spare before the big ball dropped in Times Square.

So I've actually qualified for the next round of Trope Bingo! I'm not even sure I'll try the next round (since I had such spectacular success with this one /g/), but I like to keep my options open. Plus, um. . .completist. Yeah.

Anyway, if you think you'll enjoy a piece of implausible Snape!fluff written in two hours, then read on!

This story was my entry in the recent [info]hp_silencio fest, in which the premise is to write a story with no dialogue. It was quite an interesting challenge that I enjoyed. It's not enough just to have characters who don't speak; you have to invent a scenario where lack of speech makes thematic and narrative sense.

Luckily, I had a great prompt from [livejournal.com profile] teddyradiator (thanks, Teddy!). She asked for a story in which Filius and Minerva keep vigil over Severus’ body the night he is killed in battle. Both remember the boy they taught, and the man he became. And she said she'd give bonus points for background MM/SS! Who could resist? Certainly not I.

Initially, I intended to tell the story from both Filius's and Minerva's POVs, as Teddy had requested. But Minerva decided -- reasonably, given the theme of the fest -- that she had nothing to say. So I focused on Filius instead, and I think the fic works better this way.

I wrote this fic for the summer "Wish List" fest at [info]rarepair_shorts. It's a low-key fest: people post "wishes" for pairings and prompts, and then anyone who wants to can fill a wish and post the result. No commitment, no exchange. Minimum word count is only 200. (Maximum is 2000, but my fic went a little over, which isn't a problem. As I say, low-key.)

As you might imagine, very few people request older characters on their wish lists, so when I saw someone ask for Minerva/Rolanda, I was tempted. (There is also a fun request for Minerva/Augusta, so if you are tempted, feel free to indulge. The fest runs through August 20.) I haven't written much lately, and I was feeling the need for femmeslash.

I was just going to dash off a few quick words, but "a few words" for me is usually a relative term. I wrote this, asked the accommodating [livejournal.com profile] tetleythesecond to give it a quick read and make sure that it wasn't too dull/pedestrian to be posted, and then put it up on the [info]rarepair_shorts comm.

The immediate result was to drive my recipient off Live Journal: within hours of the fic's appearance, she completely deleted her journal. (I don't really think there is a causal connection, but it makes for a fun story /g/).

Anyway, my dear flisties and friends have been kind enough to greet the story with a lot of comments -- thank you, dears; I do appreciate it. And now for posterity, I post it here.

This story was my entry in the 2014 [info]hp_beholder fest. Although I didn't know it as I wrote, this year marked the end of this wonderful series. Beholder turned out a huge number of consistently high-quality stories and artworks featuring the HP characters I like best: those who, because of age or size or features, are rarely the focus of stories of love and romance.

I'm grateful and honored that I had the chance to participate in five of the seven editions of [info]hp_beholder. There are few others places in HP fandom where I would have found so many receptive, thoughtful readers for my OCs and for the pairings I was able to explore over the years: Minerva McGonagall/Severus Snape in 2010, Eileen Prince/Sybill Trelawney in 2011, Minerva McGonagall/Alastor Moody in 2012, Rolanda Hooch/Aurora Sinistra and Fat Lady/Violet in 2013, and this year's most unusual Minerva McGonagall/Neville Longbottom.

My unending thanks to the fest's originator, [livejournal.com profile] bethbethbeth, who ran it from 2008-2012, and to [livejournal.com profile] atdelphi, who kindly gave us two additional years. Thanks, too, to [livejournal.com profile] odogoddess, my prompter/recipient, for suggesting such a fascinating, unlikely pairing as Neville/Minerva.

**It has been pointed out to me, quite correctly, that as a Muggle-born, Colin Creevey would not have been at Hogwarts during the DH year. But I prefer to believe that he found a way to sneak back and that Snape would just have chosen to ignore his presence unless an issue were made of it. We know Colin was there, sadly, for the Battle.
