They're Back!

It's holiday fest sign-up time in HP fandom! And two of my favorite fests are running again:

[community profile] hoggywartyxmas -- The best party you'll ever attend, bar none. The mod posts alone are worth the price of admission.

Sign-ups are here.

There are still spaces left, but who knows for how long? [personal profile] alisanne? [personal profile] delphipsmith? [personal profile] dreamy_dragon73? [profile] mmadfan? [personal profile] dueltastic? [profile] _hannelore? [personal profile] pauraque? [personal profile] katmarajade? [personal profile] teddyradiator? [personal profile] squibstress? [profile] cranky__crocus? All you people I'm sadly forgetting? Hie yourselves over there.

Also, the lovely, low-pressure [profile] mini_fest is also open for sign-ups. Holiday comfort and cheer galore -- like these delightful banners, made from some of last year's best entries:

Christmas at Hogwarts. . .I really need it this year. So glad these fests are back.

So I took this HP quiz: Which two Harry Potter characters make up the DNA of your personality?

And here is my result!.

Of course. Seriously on-point.

Fic: The Devil Wears Tartan (Pomona/Minerva)

Here's my entry for this year's [profile] wand_in_a_knot fest. The premise is really fun: each participant gets "tagged" by a previous participant and given a prompt. We then have 24 hours to create a story or art with an R or NC-17 rating. Any characters, any kink. So basically insta-porn. It's a really enjoyable challenge.

My prompt came from [personal profile] mywitch:

You're the picture of the devil's daughter,
I'm a pitcher of holy water.

I flung angels and devils and holy water up into the air, and they fell down as this story.

Title: The Devil Wears Tartan
Author: [personal profile] kelly_chambliss
Pairing /Character: Pomona Sprout/Minerva McGonagall
Summary: Pomona Sprout's relationship with Minerva McGonagall is a religious experience.

Fannish Update

Several fun HP things have been going on lately, so it's high time for an update.

In terms of my own fanfic writing, I've been a horrible slacker for the last few months, but I did participate in one fest, [profile] wand_in_a_knot; I'll post my story here later.

I'm way behind in reading (as in, haven't done any yet) for this fest and for [community profile] femmefest, but I hope to remedy that problem soon. I do have one rec for you, though, from the pen of the talented [personal profile] lash_larue. A hot, angsty, character-driven bit of MM/SS. Who could ask for more?

Atonement by [personal profile] lash_larue -- (Severus Snape/Minerva McGonagall; NC-17; D/s, S & M)
Summary: Sometimes wants and needs collide.

And in case you missed it last month, the always-excellent [personal profile] shadowycat drew a delectably romantic artwork that will warm the heart of any OLSB member (and anyone [like me] with a long-hair kink. SC always does fabulous hair).

To Touch You by [personal profile] shadowycat -- (Minerva McGonagall/Poppy Pomfrey; PG-13)

Speaking of the Old Lady Smut Brigade, I'd like to introduce a new flist member: [profile] tallulahdarling, a lover of Minerva/Rolanda. I plan to send her a big ol' rec list soon, so if you have any favorites you think she shouldn't miss, just let me know. Welcome, Tallulah! (Named for La Bankhead, I'm assuming?)

What the World Needs Now. . .is a Little HP Escapism

No, actually, what the world needs now is a miracle. But while we're waiting, a little anesthesia in the form of fandom won't come amiss.

Let's start with presents! The ever-wonderful [personal profile] tjs_whatnot wrote me a lovely McGonagall/Hooch story as part of the [community profile] daily_deviant Birthday fest. I'm embarrassed to say, though, that somehow I missed the email notification that the story had been posted, and I didn't read it for over a month. So sorry, dear TJ!

But the rest of you don't have to wait; you can enjoy this lovely, well-characterized bit of OLS right now:

Title: Fantasy
Author: [personal profile] tjs_whatnot
Pairing: Minerva McGonagall/Rolanda Hooch
Rating: NC-17

Fantasy, Part 1

Fantasy, Part 2

Fantasy, Part 3

My own contribution to the Birthday Fest was posted pretty late in the game (what? me procrastinate?) so I don't think anyone noticed it. It's a rather dark and not-pleasant bit of Hermione/Pansy, and I link it here for posterity.

This was the prompt:
Pairing(s)/Character(s): Pansy/Hermione, Pansy/Ginny, Narcissa/Pansy
Kink(s): Dub-con groping
Anti-Kink(s) (AKA Squicks): SPEW, a fluffy ending for this one
Prompt: Character A takes advantage of a power dynamic and things slooowly escalate.

Like a Statue, Part 1

Like a Statue, Part 2

What can I say? My mind is in an ugly place these days.

These few words are all I've managed to write since [community profile] hoggywartyxmas ended. But I've signed up for [profile] wand_in_a_knot, hoping that I can stir up at least a tiny bit of creativity in the form of insta-porn. And I have it on good authority that [community profile] hoggywartyxmas will be back for another year! OMG, do we need it.

Peace out, loveys.

Spaces Going Fast!

Want to do your part to heat up the planet without actually giving the finger to the Paris Accord and the future of the earth?

Then sign up for [profile] wand_in_a_knot! See how much HP porn you can write in 24 hours.

Sign-ups are limited to 30 spaces, and they are going fast, fast, fast! Don't dither if you're interested. Leave your name here.

I did this fest last year and had an absolute blast staying up all night to write a McGonagall/Snape/Moody threesome.

The Big Catch-Up Post! And Ticks!

Wow, has it really been over a month since I last posted? I very much fear so. What with final exams and graduation and going to visit my brother in the House of No Internet and packing up to spend the summer in NYC, May is always crazy for me -- precious little time for fannish fun. For instance, every year I swear I am going to participate in [community profile] hp_may_madness, and every year I fail to submit so much as a single entry.

But. . .all the grading, ceremony-ing, packing, and traveling has been completed, and now I am lazing about in NYC while Partner is at work. It's very chilly, damp, and cloudy in NY today, which is a-okay by me; it will be a simmering hot hell soon enough.

So what have I been up to? Here's the litany, broken down into easy-to-skip chronological chunks:

May in Rural Hamlet )

The House of No Internet and Points Local )

New York City and Points North )

Now that the holiday weekend is over, I'll draw up a schedule for academic work, and I want to get back to fandom, too. Look for a fannish post soon.

Anyone know the implications of this new Livejournal user agreement we're being asked to agree to? I'm sort of reluctant to click "yes" until I know what powers I'm giving to the Russian overlords. I looked around online for some details or explanations, but didn't find anything other than LJ's own posts.

For Me!

Over at [community profile] daily_deviant, the 11th Birthday comment fest is going on, and I have been lucky enough to receive two wonderful presents.

My first prompt: "Minerva/Severus: When a Slytherin student misbehaves, the Head of Gryffindor makes sure that the Head of Slytherin pays an appropriate penance. Likewise, when a Gryffindor student misbehaves, the Head of Slytherin seeks payment from the Head of Gryffindor.

A student has misbehaved."

[personal profile] mywitch drew a hot and clever response. Magical bondage, mmmm.

Title Misbehaving Gryffindors
Artist: [personal profile] mywitch
Rating: Definitely not work-safe.

My second prompt: "Alastor Moody, Minerva/anyone except Sybill, Albus, Molly, or current students. Their romantic relationship is over, but Alastor still has a thing for Minerva. He knows he shouldn't, but he can't resist checking out her private life with his magic eye."

This response came from the excellent [personal profile] dexstarr, who just recently returned to HP fandom from a hiatus, and am I glad she did! Such a well-characterized, poignant, bittersweet, loving fic written thoroughly and with nuance in just two short IJ comment-spaces.

Salt-and-Pepper Recs

The Salt-and-Pepper Fest is going on at [community profile] hp_goldenage. I love reading stories about the HP characters in their so-called golden years, and as usual, this year's fest offers quite a few gems. Check these out:

The Full Measure of Time by Anonymous
A well-characterized story that acknowledges the losses of age without losing the pleasures of living.

An Open Book by Anonymous
(Severus and Minerva)
A thoroughly-enjoyable look how cleverly (and snarkily) Hogwarts might be run if Minerva were headmistress and Severus were her deputy.

Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Anonymous
Older now, Ginny loves her home, and after you read this story, you will, too.

Two Fun Things

A few days ago, I posted some recs from the excellent [community profile] snapecase. Well, reveals came out today, and guess what? Three of the four stories I recced were written by the same person! [profile] ms_anthrop, a writer who is new to me (but I'm glad I found her). Obviously, I'm consistent in the kind of writing I like.

Also, I recently received three extremely detailed, kind, thoughtful reviews on AO3 -- really made my week. There are few things more dear to my writer's heart than thoughtful feedback. I don't get much response to my AO3 stuff, so these lovely out-of-the-blue comments were like a little lottery win.

Snapecase Recs

I've finally caught up with reading/viewing at the excellent [community profile] snapecase fest, and I must say, it's a feast of fine writing and art. I've never seen so many well-written, thoughtful examinations of Severus's childhood, youth, and relationships with his parents. I like stories in which Tobias and Eileen are presented with nuance and complexity, not just as cardboard abusers/victims. And we've got those fics in spades here.

Here are some of my favorites:

FIC: "From a Baby" (Severus Snape/His Hand Plus Other Useful Tools)

This bit of comic porn was my entry for this year's Kinky Kristmas fest at [community profile] daily_deviant. The prompter was the kind-and-wildly-talented [personal profile] mywitch, who asked for "Snape, by himself (thinking about: Surprise Me!)," with the kinks/themes of "wanking, getting caught" and a mood of "humorous and dirty." Her prompt was "candy cane."

I immediately had this vision of Snape sprawled on his sofa, cane (and other things) in hand, and this fic is the result. No redeeming social value whatsover. Just a whole lotta wankin' goin' on.

Title: From a Baby
From: [personal profile] kelly_chambliss
Characters/Pairings: Severus Snape/His Hand Plus Other Useful Tools. Appearances by Minerva McGonagall, Albus Dumbledore, Pomona Sprout, Rolanda Hooch, Filius Flitwick, Argus Filch, assorted students.

Other Warnings/Content: misuse of magical artefacts
Word Count: ~2500

FIC: "So Bracing" (Tom of the Leaky Cauldron, Hannah Abbott, Snape, McGonagall)

This story was my entry for the 2016 [community profile] hoggywartyxmas fest. I've always wanted to write about Tom, the landlord of the Leaky Cauldron, and I really enjoyed looking at the magical world through his eyes.

Title: So Bracing
Author: [personal profile] kelly_chambliss
Characters: Tom of the Leaky Cauldron, Hannah Abbott, Severus Snape, Minerva McGonagall, with cameos from Argus Filch, the Giant Squid, and a cheeky mirror
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: ~9300
Summary: "Oh, there's a lot to be seen and learnt in a pub," Tom said. "Like a textbook of life, a pub is."

Hoggy Hoggy Warty

The reveals for [community profile] hoggywartyxmas happen later today (Severus Snape's birthday, natch), and I've been dithering about how to do a rec post.

The thing is, almost every entry is worth a rec. I'm serious. The quality of the art and writing is always stellar at Hoggywarty, and each year, it just gets better and better. I toyed with the idea of just picking five random favorites from my Sorting Hat, but that approach doesn't really do justice to the scope of excellence of this fest.

So I've decided to do something a little different: I'm going to do a Hoggywarty "Best of. . ." list. The categories are arbitrary; the judgments are personal, reflecting the things I love about these entries:

FIC -- Most Creative Point of View: If This Dog Could Talk (Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank/Aurora Sinistra, OCC [original canine character]).
I love inventive approaches like this one. The narrator is a delight and the pairing ditto. It's also a thoughtful exploration of physical disability in the wizarding world (something I've never seen discussed, unless you count the metaphors of werewolf and Squib), and the author handles it very effectively.

FIC -- Best Use of an Ending Punchline: Butterscotch Mountain (Rolanda Hooch, Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank)
This story is a hoot -- great one-liner after great one-liner -- yet the characterization isn't neglected. Very clever magic, too.

FIC -- One that Made Me Laugh Hardest: The Sexual Education of Magical Flowers (Neville Longbottom/Luna Lovegood; Neville/Severus Snape)
The humor is pitch-perfect -- the author is really alive to the whimsical absurdity of the magical world. Great Neville characterization, too.

FIC -- Best Character Voice: Reparation (Minerva McGonagall/Horace Slughorn)
This was a really tough choice, since the Hoggywarty stories this year are feasts of expert characterization and voice. But I can just hear this tart, self-aware, confident, dedicated Minerva. One of the best Minerva voices I've read.

FIC -- Most Thought-Provoking: The Cat Cannot Feel Duty (Minerva McGonagall, Albus Dumbledore).
This was another tough choice, and I could have picked at least 2-3 others, but this story, with its thoughtful exploration of the animagus process and its careful depiction of a complex relationship, really intrigues me. Beautifully written.

ART -- Most Evocative of Holiday Spirit: Exploding Crackers (Severus Snape, Remus Lupin)
The colors, the details, the cozy room contrasting with the external snow, the shimmering firelight and tree, the characters' expressions. . .

ART -- Best Action Scenes: Great Balls of Snow (Minerva McGonagall, Severus Snape, various Hogwarts staffers)
An epic magical snowball fight is drawn so well that you can see every movement. Close-ups, far shots, movement of clothes and hair. . .just so good.

FIC -- Best Exploration of Non-Human Cultures: Retiring Minds Want to Know (Minerva McGonagall and a cast of thousands)
I particularly loved the scene between Minerva and an aged house-elf -- Minerva accepts that the best way to help the elves is simply to listen to them, and lucky for us, we get to listen along with her.

FIC -- Best Missing Scenes: TIE
Hiring Defence Against the Dark Arts Teachers and Other Unforgiveable Acts (Severus Snape, Minerva McGonagall, Albus Dumbledore)
Expert characterizations and insights

(Horace Slughorn, Albus Dumbledore)
Both men just come alive here.

FIC -- Most Heart-Tugging in the Best of Ways: Love Hides in Familiar Faces (Minerva McGonagall, Severus Snape, Filius Flitwick, Horace Slughorn, Aurora Sinistra)
This is a beautifully-imagined, creative story that makes full use of the potential of magic.

ART -- Best Exemplar of the Truth that Something Doesn’t Need to Be Explicit to Be Really Sexy: Excellent Choice! (Minerva McGonagall/Severus Snape)
Romantic, sexy, cozy, inviting, warm, tender. . .all this, and excellent hair to boot.

FIC -- Most Interesting Thematic Explorations: The Remember All (Neville Longbottom/Remus Lupin, past Remus/Severus)
Another category in which I could easily have picked any number of others, too. Here, I love the way this author explores issues of memory, of past selves, of the way our personal narratives construct our pasts and our futures. Very nice characterization of Neville in particular.

ART -- Best Santa Hat -- Just Take It Off (Neville Longbottom/Charlie Weasley)

FIC -- Most Haunting Character Study -- Friends, Teachers, Countrymen
A powerful, well-written look at Headmaster Severus Snape during Christmas of the DH year. The author shows us a man of intensity and complexity -- not always a "nice" person; in fact, often harsh. . .but at bottom, he's a just man.

FIC -- Scariest, Funniest Satire: Election (Kingsley Shackelbolt, Rita Skeeter, Filius Flitwick, Stan Shunpike, and more)
People of reasonable intelligence can be tricked and manipulated, through misrepresentation and outright lies, into voting for dangerous idiots. Who knew?

FIC -- Best Snark and Repartee: TIE
The War of Snape's Nose (Severus Snape, Lucius Malfoy, Minerva McGonagall, Hogwarts Staffers)
Be prepared to laugh out loud at this witty feast.

A Term of Endearment (Minerva McGonagall, Severus Snape, Harry Potter, dozens more)
This fine story covers many years and many characters, and I was swept along with it, reveling in the strong characterizations and the clever insights and the power of a well-placed "Fuck off."

FIC -- Best Rare Pair That Works So Well That You Wonder Why on Earth It's a Rare Pair: Seasons of Love (Pomona Sprout/Aberforth Dumbledore)
A beautifully-rendered story of the intersections of romance and friendship. So many fine lines and character insights.

FIC -- Most Inventive Use of the Restricted Section: Revelation in the Library (Severus Snape/Hermione Granger; Neville Longbottom)

FIC -- Effective Use of an Ensemble Cast: A Christmas Conspiracy (Minerva McGonagall, Hogwarts staff)
A fun story of a satisfying Christmas surprise. Love the broom deliveries.

FIC -- Best Post-DH Career: Renaissance (Malfoy family, Severus Snape).
An enjoyable exploration of post-DH Malfoys and the quest for power. I loved Draco's possible new career.

FIC -- Best Long-Term Romance: Through the Spiral of the Years (Minerva McGonagall/Severus Snape)
You'll never disappoint me with a good Minerva/Severus story.

FIC -- Best Long-Term Hatemance: Brotherly Love XXX (Albus Dumbledore, Aberforth Dumbledore)
No, not an incest story, but nonetheless, a compelling story about a complicated and fraught relationship.

And don't forget to check out my excellent gift: See previous rec here.

Yes! Yes! Yes!

Horrified and terrified by the incoming Trump administration? (as you should be)

Want to do more than just vent your necessary outrage?

Here are a few ideas.

No, they won't by themselves stop the coming debacle. But every piece helps.

"The point is not necessarily to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power, but rather to deprive it of oxygen and eyeballs; to plant a flag of resistance firmly at the opening gate."

"Making Trump appear normal is contingent on public cooperation, which must be denied."

"Affirmative actions must be as much your guide and solace as resistance is your fuel and fire."

Reccy Snowflakes or Snowflaky Recs

Today's Snowflake Challenge is to "post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create." Since I was planning to do a rec post for [info]daily_deviant's Kinky Kristmas anyway, I can do the proverbial "avian-destruction-with-a-single-stone" thing.

Kinky Kristmas was great fun this year, as always, and I still have a lot to read before the reveals on Sunday. As usual, you'll find a wide range of pairings, tones, and kinks. Here are a few of my favorites:

Nine Ways of Looking at a Book by Anonymous [personal profile] pauraque. (Minerva McGonagall/Hermione Granger)
I've already recced my own superb gift, but it deserves another mention. Book fic! Old-lady fic! Writing fic! And beautifully written and characterized to boot.

Unquestionable; Unforgivable by Anonymous [personal profile] purplefluffycat. (Albus Dumbledore/Gellert Grindelwald)
Another intelligent, well-characterized story that offers a lot of insight into young Albus.

Imagine by Anonymous [personal profile] tjs_whatnot (Luna Lovegood/Alastor Moody)
Even though I love rare pairs, I approached this one with some trepidation, since I don't usually love chan. But the author handles the whole thing brilliantly -- the "pairing" is Luna's fantasy, presented in a way that makes sad sense. The characterization and writing are excellent; one of my favorites of the fest.

Moonbeam in the Palm of His Hand by Anonymous [personal profile] writcraft (Severus Snape/Remus Lupin)
A nice take on the post-war AU trope in which Snape and Lupin survive. The sex is subservient to character and atmosphere, which is my favorite type of kink fic.

Welcome to 2017

I can't in good conscience wish you a "happy new year," because I'm pretty sure that the miseries of 2017 will surpass anything that 2016 offered, at least on a public scale. 2016 gave the threat of new and powerful authoritarian regimes driven by ignorance and bigotry; 2017, unfortunately, will bring the reality of them. It's already brought us the continuation of terror.

However. Life will go on, and there will be good things and good people in it.

Among those good people, dear flist, I'm happy to count you. You bring so much pleasure to my life, and I look forward to your continued friendship.
